Lucky - Alice Sebold Review

12:57 PM

Summary:

In a memoir hailed for its searing candor and wit, Alice Sebold reveals how her life was utterly transformed when, as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, she was brutally raped and beaten in a park near campus. What propels this chronicle of her recovery is Sebold's indomitable spirit-as she struggles for understanding ("After telling the hard facts to anyone, from lover to friend, I have changed in their eyes"); as her dazed family and friends sometimes bungle their efforts to provide comfort and support; and as, ultimately, she triumphs, managing through grit and coincidence to help secure her attacker's arrest and conviction. In a narrative by turns disturbing, thrilling, and inspiring, Alice Sebold illuminates the experience of trauma victims even as she imparts wisdom profoundly hard-won: "You save yourself or you remain unsaved."

Review:

I don't know. It's terrific that Alice Sebold was able to over come her rape and caught her rapist but I had several issues about this book.

The beginning of the book was very graphic describing Sebold's rape, about what happened after and how the rapist beat her and treated her. I could handle this part even though I would grimace throughout but I felt this story was stretched out longer than it needed to be. Sebold described events that I didn't feel necessary to include, which just extended the story and didn't get to any point.

I was to the point that with less than 100 pages left to go I just wanted this book to end and figure out why it was taking so long for Sebold to conclude her story.

Since the guy was caught I wasn't sure why the book had so many pages left. I understand she's stating how living with being raped is hard to get through but I still think the story was stretched with too many explained details which concluded with Sebold losing me on the way to the end of the book.
